Dog, 1951
Le Chien
Giacometti often recalled how he had long thought about sculpting a dog. Then, returning home late one night, he felt as if he had been transformed into the animal, its snout sniffing the ground – and in that moment he saw the sculpture which he was finally able to execute a few weeks later. It may have been modelled on a greyhound belonging to Pablo Picasso.
The master cast in plaster is also held by the Alberto Giacometti Foundation (see GS 358).
