Small Bust on a Double Base, c. 1940/1941
Petit Buste sur double socle

Ever since 1938, Alberto had been trying to capture the feeling of sudden awareness of an acquaintance in the distance. Up until 1946 he continued pursuing this unachievable project of inscribing faraway vision into a sculpture. He tried making the figures smaller and smaller while placing them on disproportionately large bases in an attempt to suggest distance, as with the frame of a picture.
