This singular bas-relief of the artist’s mother appears to be based on the older drawing ‘The Artist’s Mother’ by Giovanni Giacometti dating from 1908–1910 (GS 176). Here, then, Alberto views Annetta through his father’s eyes, with a degree of atmospheric softness and kindness that is otherwise absent from his art.
