Hans Stocker (1896–1983)
Alberto Giacometti (Study), 1930
Alberto Giacometti

Hans Stocker was a friend of Alberto Giacometti’s in Paris in the 1920s, and acquired the 1925 self-portrait head from him while it was being executed, probably in exchange for another work (see GS 180). As a result this piece was preserved, the sole survivor from the sculptures made in Paris when Giacometti was studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.
