Head, c. 1914
Kopf

This sheet was inserted into the sketchpad of youthful drawings (GS 216). It too contains overdrawn heads of writers and artists, their precision a curious contrast with the child-like script, misspelt names and other typically youthful features: murder ballads, caricatures of figures in tail coats and uniforms, including Kaiser Wilhelm II being conveyed Heavenwards by little devils – clearly this is the First World War and the sentiment is resolutely anti-German. Occasionally the pad fell into the hands of his younger siblings, as the child’s scribblings reveal.
