Giovanni Giacometti (1868–1933)
The Mother, c. 1904
Die Mutter

In her arms Annetta Giacometti holds Ottilia, who was born on 31 May 1904, while she is flanked by Alberto and Diego. The painting was begun in 1902 and reworked in 1904 save for the landscape and the infant’s dress; however technical issues must have arisen at an early stage that led Giacometti to abandon the work; extensive flaking ensued, with the result that the image is now no more than a document. The inspiration was the 1902 painting ‘Annetta und Alberto’, which is now in the Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur.
