Hotel Room III, c. 1963
Chambre dʼhôtel III

Drawings GS 101–105 were probably made during preparations for the major exhibition at the Kunsthaus Zürich that opened on 2 December 1962. At the time, Giacometti was staying at the Hotel Plaza near Stadelhofen railway station. In 1964 he is reported to have said to Carlton Lake:

‘When I was in Switzerland I made some drawings for the Thompson Collection of my works that are on show in Zurich. They’re going to set up a foundation. Thompson only had early drawings, but I want to show some newer ones there, so I’ve given them around twenty that I made recently including a small table and some chairs. But the longer I work on them the more I notice what a complex and difficult task it is. I could spend the rest of my life just drawing two chairs and a table.’
