This work is the outcome of an intensive engagement with the post-Cubist sculptures of Henri Laurens and Jacques Lipchitz and with African art.

Six examples of the bronze were cast at the Modern Art Foundry, New York, in 1954. The plaster version of the ‘Torso’ dating from 1925–26 is also held by the Alberto Giacometti Foundation (see GS 001).
