Head of the Artist’s Mother, c. 1920
Kopf der Mutter

The head and base were fashioned separately and then joined together. The head was cast from the initial Plasticine model using a negative plaster mould (lost mould). The surface displays no evidence of further working. The cast cubical base with its embedded wooden rod were worked by adding and removing plaster.

No subsequent moulds were made from this plaster, meaning that it did not serve as a template for a bronze cast. The initial Plasticine model, which fragmented during the creation of the negative plaster mould, was not used as a template for bronze casts until after the artist’s death (for example GS 163).
