Lotar II

The photographer Eli Lotar was a long-standing acquaintance of Giacometti’s. In his youth he worked for Georges Bataille’s magazine ‘Documents’ and in 1929, the very year in which Michel Leiris’s first ground-breaking article about Giacometti was published, so to were Lotar’s photographs of slaughterhouses. Towards the end of 1963 he was a regular visitor to the studio; the three busts that Giacometti made of him in 1964–65 mark the end point of his life’s work (see GS 250 and GS 415).
