Fragment of Head, c. 1953/1954
Fragment de tête

The head was created by casting the initial clay model using a two-part negative plaster mould (lost mould). Subsequently, Giacometti reworked the surface by adding and removing plaster and applying a few strokes of black and reddish brown paint. An iron rod embedded in the plaster at thebase of the neck, which apparently originally made the object into a ‘tête sur tige’, is missing today.
