Head of Diego II (Mask), c. 1953
Tête de Diego II (masque)

At first ʻTête de Diego IIʼ was created by making a cast of the initial clay or Plasticine model using a negative plaster mould. Subsequently, Giacometti slightly reworked the surface by adding and removing plaster.

From 1958, the bust served as a template for bronze casts using sand casting. In the foundry, the back of the bronze was inscribed with marks in black felt pen to indicate the desired thickness of the walls of the bronze.
