Later labelled ‘1937’, this work is the most impressive of a number of similar portraits created in 1935. Seemingly the change of direction reawakened Giacometti’s need to interrogate his own features for the first time since 1925. He subsequently engraved a similar self-portrait on the ‘Cube’ (see GS 025 and GS 298).
