Lotar I
The photographer Eli Lotar was a long-standing acquaintance of Giacometti’s; in his youth he worked for Georges Bataille’s journal ‘Documents’. In 1929, the very year in which Michel Leiris’s first ground-breaking article about Giacometti was published, so too were Lotar’s photographs from abattoirs.
Towards the end of 1963 he was a regular visitor to the studio; the three busts that Giacometti made of him in 1964–65 mark the conclusion of his life’s work (see GS 373 and GS 415).
