Nude, 1923
Nu
The nude study emphasizes the tactile volume of the body, which is modelled as a compact, earthy mass as befits the approach of a sculptor. Accordingly, the picture marks the transition to a much more toned-down colour palette that will dominate from now on. While working on the study, Giacometti painted over the strong colours, such as the blue of the background, with more muted hues.
