Portrait of Isaku Yanaihara, 1957
Portrait Isaku Yanaihara

Isaku Yanaihara (1918–1989) came to Paris from Japan in 1954 to study existentialist philosophy. Between 1956 and 1961 Giacometti made numerous paintings of him in which he develops his late style. This is an unusual example of a portrait that was not painted over after the first version.
